We are looking for a Finance Manager who will play a key role in supporting both Decision Support Services/Finance and Operations. This position will provide business intelligence, support monthly reporting activities, manage annual budgeting and strategic planning, conduct financial performance management and variance analysis, lead labor productivity initiatives, support profitability analysis, and add financial insight into special initiatives that supports the overall strategic direction of the organization. The candidate builds trusted relationships with key stakeholders in Finance and Clinical Operations.

The Finance Manager is responsible for the financial planning, analysis, and reporting function within the UCSF Medical Center and Langley Porter Hospital and Clinics and serves as a business partner for Operations and Finance leadership. The Finance Manager collaborates with Operations Leadership, Information Systems, Accounting, and the Finance Shared Service Center to ensure timely and accurate reporting of monthly financial statements and supporting analysis for the Medical Center and Langley Porter, along with service line profitability and cost accounting reporting.

The Finance Manager is responsible for leadership in the following areas:

  • Create models/financial analysis tools that are used to create presentations to Senior Leadership and the Board that assist in understanding progress towards achieving organizational goals (e.g. payor mix data analysis, business unit profitability, staff productivity, labor efficiency, value improvement, business entity reporting).
  • Work alongside operations to manage productivity targets and relevant reporting.
  • Provide timely analyses to assist with productive labor management.
  • Conducts ongoing financial analysis of operations that include recommendations for performance improvement to senior leadership.
  • Utilize benchmarking data to advise on best practices and provide reporting
  • Contribute to the development of the annual operating budget and the strategic long-range plan by closely working together with Operations, Strategy, and other departments.
  • Summarize and present budget and long-range plan, KPI's, and other analytics to senior management, as well as make recommendations based on sound financial analysis.
  • Prepare ad-hoc analysis to facilitate executive decision making e.g. productivity benchmarking, profitability analysis of business lines, investment planning, etc.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related area or four years of equivalent experience/training.
  • Six or more years of experience in decision support/financial management, preferably in a hospital/medical setting
  • Knowledge of clinical, financial, and business information technology software, hardware, tools, techniques, and systems. (e.g. MS Word, PowerPoint, and MS Project)
  • Proficiency in the use of integrated financial reporting tools and underlying data warehouse and cost accounting methodologies
  • Finance/Financial Management, Analysis and Modeling Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to analyze data utilizing defined but different processes.
  • Problem-solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, interpret and document trends and variances timely (on an ad hoc, monthly, quarterly, and annual basis)
  • Deep financial data knowledge and ability to use advanced business analysis skills to work on issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors and exercise
  • Ability to create solutions on how departments can convert current activity into new technologies or more effective and efficient processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent ability to motivate, influence, and persuade others, and cultivate a strong commitment to efficiency, functionality, and quality customer service.
  • Excellent skills in developing strategic plans, evaluating and developing staff competencies, organizing operations, and fiscal management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three or more years of experience providing management and/or leadership to Finance teams
  • Cost Accounting knowledge, interpreting Cost Accounting results, and presenting recommendations to Senior Leadership.
  • Interpreting Financial Results and presenting recommendations to Senior Leadership
  • Functional knowledge of large-scale integrated client-server / ERP financial systems (e.g., PeopleSoft systems).
  • Thorough knowledge of healthcare decision support systems (e.g. EPSi) and best practices, as well as clinical finance and cost accounting principles.
  • Industry knowledge with hospitals, physician groups, health plans, or academic medical centers.
