Job Description

The East Region Jefferson Health General Surgery Lead Advanced Practice Clinician (APC) will have 3+ years of clinical experience as a Masterrsquo;s-prepared Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner (with RNFA) and will have approximately 80% clinical and 20% administrative duties.

This department Lead APC is responsible for but not limited to responsibilities detailed below. The APC lead will be expected to ensure appropriate representation of APCs. Work closely with the APC Manager and/or Director along with respective leaders to provide continuity and standardization of care across organizational platform. APC Lead will facilitate organizational and department initiatives with best-practice approach, to further advance APC practice while providing patient-centered care. The APC Lead will contribute to the development/implementation and surveillance of department-specific competencies/protocols/pathways and will do so with intent to enhance their respective service line and supportive growth within the organization.

This department Lead APC will clinically practice under the sponsorship of a board-certified physician and in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary health team. The Lead APC maintains individual agreements in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements and is responsible for the oversight and provision of comprehensive patient care at Jefferson Health.

This department Lead APC functions in an expanded role and ensures compliance with State Board(s) of Medicine and/or Nursing, complies with APC practice guidelines, hospital bylaws, and physician supervising / delegation agreements in accordance with state and hospital applicable regulatory requirements and specialty scope of practice. The APC is granted affiliate privileges by Jefferson Health medical staff, including specific clinical responsibilities and procedures, reviewed as per regulatory/organizational requirements.

Clinical Duties

  • Provide inpatient care in the area of expertise.
  • Works as scheduled and meet established notification for absences.
  • Is consistently on time and ready to work at the start of shift.
  • Operates within organization policies and procedures.
  • Consistently adheres to health and safety standards.
  • Provides high-quality patient care, exceptional customer service and other health-related services to meet and/or exceed the needs of patients and their families.
  • Capable of establishing communication and implementation of protocols and team awareness, to ensure ongoing clinical competency of both new and existing employees as appropriate.
  • Champion the philosophy of care, fostering respect and open communication between APCs and physicians.
  • Flexible to clinically work and meet with staff monthly and as needed, to maintain continuity with staff.
  • Knowledgable in electronic medical record (EMR) and other hospital-based informatic systems/applications. Stays up to date with EMR compliance, and associated changes/enhancements, as it relates to departmental clinical practice.
  • Promotes and supports APC care model changes with focus on optimizing the independent clinical practice APCs and facilitate ongoing refinement of such models by department.
  • Requires the ability to sit and be stationary for prolonged periods of time, normal or corrected vision, and manual dexterity sufficient to perform work on a personal computer. Able to provide clinical services of known expertise, which may include standing for prolonged periods of time, and/or subject to chemical, radiological, biological exposures (i.e. blood and body fluids).

Administrative Duties ndash; include but are not limited to:

  • Provide a consistent line of communication and support between the APC team and Manager or Director (and department chiefs / leadership) to ensure the group is organized and informed.
  • Partners with APC Manager or Director and other relevant leaders on department initiatives, including recruitment, retention, onboarding/orientation, performance management, career development.
  • Keeps the APC Manager or Director informed and updated, as appropriate.
  • Takes proactive ownership of the team schedule and CME reimbursement if/as appropriate.
  • Will work collaboratively with the APC team and physician colleagues to ensure appropriate coverage.
  • Ensures appropriate APC coverage in the designated areas of clinical department.
  • Monitors staffing levels and adjusts as necessary.
  • Ensure APC training/onboarding requirements and documents/guides are up to date.
  • Participate in onboarding of new APC team members.
  • Help facilitate monitor and maintain APC written agreements ndash; to ensure / promote compliance
  • Participate, support, and lead in quality and compliance, performance, productivity, and benchmarking initiatives to advance care delivery.
  • Provide outreach/training/education as needed/assigned.
  • Performs random review of EMR clinical documents (I.e. History and Physical) to explore areas of opportunity for improvement in documentation, critical thinking, medical management, and quality measures.
  • Maintain and demonstrate competencies for designated priveleges requested as required for ongoing professional practice evaluation (OPPE) and outcomes.
  • Accountable for various projects/tasks, and other department/APC related duties incidental to the work described herein.
  • Creates and/or supports new ideas that enhance unit/department goals or reduce costs.
  • Shows initiative and seeks out opportunities for improvement.
  • Performs duties in an independent manner based on guidelines set by supervision.
  • Identifies problems, considers viable alternatives, and implements agreed upon solutions based on analysis and sound reasoning.
  • Participates in conflict resolution in a positive professional manner.

Education: Graduate of Accredited Masterrsquo;s Degree Program

  • National Board Certification as an Acute Care -RNFA Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.

Experience: Clinical ndash; 3 years of relevant clinical practice as an Advanced Practice Clinician

Leadership/Management: 1-2 years of management and/or supervising experience preferred.

Licensure/Certification/Registration Requirements: State licensure. Proper certification from respective professional board. Hold membership in National and State Professional Associations.
