Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Laboratory Aide - Perlmutter Cancer Center - Lake Success.

In this role, the successful candidate Position Summary:Responsible for preparing laboratory specimens for designated location prior to testing. Unpacks allspecimens received for testing in designated laboratory departments or locations such as staging of specimens, centrifuge, separate serum, and blood smears. Aliquots sample for departments. Prepares excess specimen samples for storage and resolves and document problem specimens. The Lab Aide is an unlicensed member of the laboratory staff who works with supervision from licensed personnel.

Job Responsibilities:

    • Determines the priority of work to ensure rapid turn around of critical test results. Maintains accurate and timelydatabase entry via the Laboratory Information System in use. Performs only those tests that are authorized by the Laboratory Supervisor and requires a degree of skill commensurate with the individual's education, training or experience, and technical abilities.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    • Reviews the Policy and Procedure, Safety, and Infection Control manuals as required. Maintains a clean,efficient, and safe work area, contributes to the team effort, exhibits flexibility and adaptability to change, unexpected circumstances and wide spectrum of laboratory situations. Cooperates with coworkers and managers to maintain a productive and harmonious work environment. Adheres to attendance and dress code standards.
    • Attends section meetings and/or in-service training sessions that communicate changes in laboratory practicesand/or regulations and compliance as required or reads and initials meeting minutes if attendance is not possible. Maintains an awareness of implementation or changes in policies by reading written and/or electroniccommunications, postings and protocols. The Lab Aide may be asked to participate in quality assurance and/orlOP projects as designated by the Coordinator of Laboratory Services or Supervisor Laboratory Technologist
    • Performs certain phases of testing by both manual and automated methods, which require neither decisions norquantitative measurement. Prepares and operates laboratory instruments with mechanical or digital readouts of test results. Recognizes direct causes (technical and instrumental) of problems and reports them to a licensed technologist. Operates and maintains laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers, heat blocks. Forwards test results for verification by licensed personnel using established procedures for manual and electronic data management. Prepares and stains slides of body fluids. Cleans and maintains laboratory glassware and equipment. Reports test results to appropriate individuals following policies in compliance with HIPPA regulations. Responds to general and problem inquiries concerning test requests/results and operational aspects of clinical testing.
    • Under the direct and constant supervision of a licensed Medical Technologist, and using approved proceduresand protocols, assists in performance of routine laboratory tests in compliance with the laws and regulations.
    • Collects, prepares, separates, aliquots, labels, and distributes specimens for in house and outside laboratorytesting following established procedures. Stores and maintains specimens for prescribed times and disposes of them according to approved safety protocols. Identifies patients by strict adherence to established procedures and consistently labels samples accurately and completely and maintains a clean, well-stocked outpatient phlebotomy area.
    • The Lab Aide may be asked to assist in the orientation and training of new employees. Receives, processes,and distributes laboratory specimens and test requisitions. Verifies specimen identification, assesses appropriateness of test orders and quality of the specimen by recognizing factors that affect procedures and results, and takes appropriate action within predetermined limits when corrections are indicated. Logs patient demographic data, specimen collection information, and test orders using established procedures for manual and electronic data management.
    • Performs waived or fully automated moderate complexity testing must follow the laboratory's procedures forspecimen identification, handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results; identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the supervisor or Coordinator. Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Minimum Qualifications:High school diploma or the equivalent required. One year of clinical laboratory experience and practical knowledge ofinformation system operations. Phlebotomy Certificate and/or Certification in Medical Assisting or equivalent experience preferred. Appropriate interpersonal skills for interacting with patients, physicians, and other customers of the Cancer Center. Strong verbal communication skills in English language. Strong writing skills in the English language to include, but not limited to, legibility, neatness and completeness of thought. Detail oriented, capable of handling stress from irregular workload and demonstrate businesslike and professional attitude at all times

Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:two years of college (60 semester units), including some chemistry/biological science class work, or an equivalentcombination of education and experience preferred.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York state Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $33,072.00 - $52,088.40 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
