Position Description

Nature Publishing Group – the prestigious international scientific publishing company – seeks a Systems Administrator to work in our New York office as an integral part of the Web Hosting team for NPG’s growing portfolio of online products.

This position is responsible for a broad range of systems and network administration duties supporting the Nature.com web and pushlive platforms. This position will liase with all departments within NPG as well as external support companies. This position works directly as a member of a small team of systems and database administrators responsible for an array of Nature Publishing Technology initiatives.

Primary tasks for this position include:

  • Web, application, file and mail server administration and support (Deployments, patches, tuning, change management and account maintenance)
  • Installation of new hardware, software and servers
  • Repair or arrange for repair of defective hardware
  • Monitoring the network and applications < li >Writing and/or modifying scripts and configuration files (Apache, Jetty, Jboss, Tomcat, Ruby on Rails, Postfix, MFS, etc.)
  • Ensure system and site availability for both internal and external users
  • Ensure that company data is backed up and maintain data recovery procedure
  • Network administration and maintenance of F5-BigIP load balancers and Cisco PIX firewalls.
Requirements:
  • Thorough knowledge of RedHat and Apache
  • Knowledge of a majority of the following technologies: Polopoly, MarkLogic, Memcache, iSCSI, SANs, OpenLDAP, VMWare ESX, MS Windows 2003/2008, SQL Server 2005, MySQL, Tomcat, Ruby, Python, Cisco, F5/BigIP, Puppet
  • 2-3 Years relevant IT experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Availability to travel as needed to Washington DC, Boston, San Francisco and London.
  • This position will require after hours support of systems above and involves participation in an “on-call” rotation


Education: Bachelors degree in computer science required
